Portland's Volumetric Concrete, Mixed at the Pour

A volumetric truck hauls raw cement, aggregate, and water in separate compartments, then proportions and mixes concrete at the placement zone. Portland Concrete books volumetric for repair pours, remote sites, and multi-stop jobs where paying for a full pre-batched load makes no sense. Free written quote on every order.

When volumetric wins

The Right Jobs for Volumetric Concrete in Portland

Think about a foundation patch in Gresham where the crew won't know the exact volume until they open the wall, or a series of small slab repairs spread across three Hillsboro addresses in a single day. Ordering a full pre-batched load for either scenario means paying for concrete that ends up in a wheelbarrow at the curb. A volumetric truck carries raw materials in calibrated compartments and mixes only what the crew actually places, so the leftover problem disappears.

Remote sites add a second layer of risk with standard ready mix: long haul times eat into the concrete's working window, and a load that starts setting before the crew can finish the pour is a serious problem. Because a volumetric truck mixes on arrival rather than at a plant, the concrete is fresh at the point of placement regardless of drive time. Slump and admixture dosing can also be dialed in at the site within the truck's calibrated ranges, which gives the crew flexibility when conditions differ from the original plan.

Volumetric fits naturally alongside our boom pump concrete service for hard-to-reach pours, and it pairs with warehouse slab repair work where exact volumes are rarely known in advance. For predictable large pours, standard ready mix concrete is usually the better call. Questions about which fits your job? See our concrete estimate guide.

How it works

From Quote to Pour: Volumetric Concrete Step by Step

  1. Quote the mix spec and volume range

We take the mix design, target strength, and your best estimate of the volume needed. The quote is written and firm on price per yard; the final bill reflects actual yards placed, not the estimate.

  2. Truck loads raw materials at the yard

Cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and water are loaded into separate calibrated compartments on the volumetric truck before it leaves for the Portland-area site.

  3. On-site proportioning and continuous mixing

At the placement zone, the truck's proportioning system meters each ingredient to spec and mixes continuously. The crew pulls fresh concrete as fast or as slowly as the pour requires, with no clock running on a pre-mixed load.

  4. Meter reads actual yards, invoice matches

When the pour is done, the truck's meter shows the cubic yards mixed and discharged. That number goes on the invoice. If you used 4.3 yards, you pay for 4.3 yards.

Knowing the limits

Where Volumetric Fits, and Where It Doesn't

Volumetric is a strong fit for three scenarios: pours where the final volume is genuinely uncertain, sites far enough from a batch plant that standard truck timing is risky, and multi-stop jobs where one truck needs to serve several small pours in sequence. Outside those scenarios, the economics shift. A large continuous slab pour, for example, is usually better served by rotating standard trucks that can deliver more total yards per hour than a single volumetric unit.

Mix designs that require specialty admixtures or cement types outside the volumetric truck's calibrated range also need to be pre-batched. In those cases, our specialty concrete mixes service is the right path. For jobs that combine a pump with on-site mixing, our line pump service coordinates with volumetric supply. The full picture of what we handle is on the ready mix overview page, and cost context is in our concrete cost guide.

Common questions

Volumetric Concrete Questions, Answered

Calibration, mix adjustments, remote-site delivery and billing.

Volumetric trucks use calibrated proportioning systems that meet industry accuracy standards. The mix spec is consistent within tolerance; calibration is verified on the truck regularly and supports any quality documentation needed.
Within the truck's calibration ranges, yes. Slump, water content, and admixture dosing can be adjusted at the placement zone in response to what the crew needs. Major mix changes (different cement type, structural admixtures) need to be planned upfront.
Usually yes per actual yard, but the all-in cost for variable-volume pours is often lower because you do not pay for unused yards. The cost comparison depends on the specific project; we will run the math at quote time.
Yes, often the best option. Standard truck wait time on remote sites can exceed the working window for the mix; volumetric mixes on demand at the site so no wait-time setting issue.
Per cubic yard actually mixed and discharged, with a minimum charge and a delivery fee. The meter on the truck reads the actual yards; billing reflects that number, not the estimate.

★★★★★

Volumetric for a foundation patch where I had no idea exactly how many yards I would need. Mixed what I used, paid for what I used. Saved me the cost of a wasted half-load. Right tool for the job.

★★★★★

Job site two hours from any plant. Volumetric truck mixed on arrival, no wait-time setting issue. Pour went smoothly, billing matched actual yards. Real solution for remote work.

Y. Q5

★★★★★

Multi-stop delivery for a series of small repair pours across town. Volumetric handled all of them on one truck, billed per stop. Way more efficient than ordering separate small loads.

Q. Q5
Independent Contractor, Hillsboro
★★★★★

They were honest that volumetric was the right tool for my variable-volume work and standard would be wrong. Trust earned by recommending the right service even when it is theirs.
