Soil Pressure Demands Engineered Retaining Walls in Portland

Gravity and water work against every retaining wall, so the footing, rebar and drainage have to be sized for the actual load, not guessed. Portland Concrete builds poured and block walls that stay put through freeze-thaw cycles, and fixes walls that have started to lean or crack. Free written estimate on every project.

The hidden structure

What Separates a Solid Retaining Wall from One That Fails

Most homeowners see only the face of a retaining wall, but the real work happens below grade. The footing must be deep enough and wide enough to resist the lateral force of soil and water. Rebar runs through the slab to tie it together. Behind the wall, a drainage layer and weeping tile prevent water from accumulating and pushing the concrete outward.

When we build a poured concrete wall, we excavate the footing trench, set forms, tie rebar, and pour a monolithic slab that acts as one unified structure. A block wall uses the same engineering principles but with cored and reinforced units stacked to height.

If a wall is already moving, wall repair means identifying whether the problem is drainage, footing settlement, or missing reinforcement, then fixing the root cause. Walls often integrate with patio grading and other site concrete work on the property.

The build sequence

How a Concrete Retaining Wall Gets Built Right in Portland

  1. Site survey and load calculation

We measure the height, slope angle, soil type and what sits above the wall, then calculate the footing width and rebar schedule needed to resist that load.

  2. Excavate and set footing

The footing trench is dug below frost line, and concrete is poured to the engineered depth and width. This is the foundation everything depends on.

  3. Form, reinforce and pour (or lay block)

For poured walls, forms are set and rebar is tied in place before concrete is placed and finished. For block, units are laid, cored and filled with reinforced concrete.

  4. Install drainage and backfill

A perforated drain pipe and filter fabric go behind the wall before backfill, so water moves away from the concrete instead of building hydrostatic pressure.

When walls move

Fixing a Leaning Wall: Retaining Wall Repair or Rebuild

A wall that leans, bulges or cracks is telling you something is wrong. Usually it is water pressure building behind the wall because drainage failed, or the footing was not deep enough for the load. Sometimes the rebar was undersized or missing entirely. Retaining wall repair starts by finding the cause.

If the wall has moved only slightly and the footing is intact, we can often stabilise it and repair the damage. If it has shifted significantly, rebuilding it with the correct footing depth, rebar and drainage is the safer and more honest choice. We assess the wall on site and tell you which path makes sense, whether that is a poured or block rebuild.

Common questions

Concrete Retaining Wall Questions, Answered

Engineering, drainage, poured versus block and repair for retaining walls in Portland.

The parts you do not see: a footing sized to the height and load, reinforcement tied through the wall, and a drainage layer and weeping tile behind it. A wall built without those leans and fails no matter how good the face looks.
Both work when engineered properly. A poured wall is a single monolithic structure; a block wall offers more finish options. We recommend one based on the height, the site and the look you want.
Almost always water pressure or a footing problem. Without drainage behind it, water builds up and pushes the wall over time. Retaining wall repair addresses that cause, not just the lean.
It depends how far it has moved. A wall caught early can often be stabilised and repaired; one that has shifted badly is safer rebuilt right. We give you a straight answer on the free assessment.
Taller walls and walls that retain a surcharge often do, and may need engineered drawings. We tell you what your wall needs upfront and can handle the permit as part of the project.

Poured a retaining wall to hold back the side yard. They put real drainage and weeping tile behind it. A full year of freeze-thaw and it has not moved a millimetre.

Our old block wall was bulging. They explained it was a drainage problem, rebuilt it properly with the footing it should have had. Solid now.

Block retaining wall that ties into the patio grading. Engineered, cored and reinforced, and the finish matches everything else in the yard.

They were honest that our leaning wall had moved too far to just patch. Rebuilt it right and walked us through why the first one failed.
