Backyard Concrete Built to Last Through Portland Winters

A backyard's concrete surfaces, kitchen counter, fire pit base, pool deck, take the hardest weather and foot traffic. We design them as one connected system, finished to match your home and patio, built with air-entrained mixes and proper drainage to survive freeze-thaw cycles. Every project includes a free written estimate and a firm completion date.

Design strategy

Why Separate Pours Create Visible Seams in Concrete

When a backyard is built in stages, kitchen one year, fire pit the next, pool deck later, the concrete never reads as one space. Colour shifts between pours, elevation changes create trip hazards, and the slab finishes don't match. A properly planned yard pours everything at once.

We start by mapping the entire outdoor space: where the kitchen counter sits, how the fire pit pad relates to seating, the slope and drainage of the pool deck, and how all three tie into existing stamped or exposed-aggregate patios.

The concrete gets a compacted granular base, air-entrained mix for freeze-thaw protection, and control joints on a grid. Drainage slopes away from the house and pool. Finishes, broom, exposed aggregate, or colour, are chosen to unify the whole yard. This is what keeps a high-value outdoor space from cracking its first winter and what makes it feel intentional rather than added-on.

The sequence

From Site Assessment to Finished Outdoor Concrete

  1. Walk the site and measure

We assess the yard's slope, drainage patterns, existing utilities, and how the kitchen, fire pit and deck relate to the house and pool.

  2. Prepare the base for each slab

Excavation removes topsoil and debris. Each surface gets a compacted granular base and forms set to the correct elevation and slope.

  3. Pour and finish in one sequence

We pour the concrete in a planned order, finishing each surface with the chosen texture, broom, exposed aggregate, or colour, so everything matches.

  4. Joint, cure and seal the yard

Control joints are cut on layout. The concrete cures properly, then we apply sealer and walk you through the maintenance schedule.

What gets poured

Four Concrete Elements That Make an Outdoor Living Space

Most Portland backyards combine multiple concrete surfaces. An outdoor kitchen requires a solid, level counter and prep pad; a fire pit or fire table needs a non-combustible base sized to the seating perimeter.

A pool deck endures wet feet, sun exposure, chlorine splash, and repeated freeze-thaw. It gets a textured, slip-resistant finish and graded drainage. When an existing deck is structurally sound but worn, pool deck resurfacing applies a fresh finish without demolition, saving cost and time.

Common questions

Outdoor Living Concrete Questions, Answered

Designing, pouring and caring for outdoor kitchens, fire pits and pool decks in Portland.

We pour the hard surfaces of a backyard, outdoor kitchen counters and pads, fire-pit pads, and pool decks, plus resurfacing for decks that are sound but dated.
It usually should. Designing the kitchen, fire pit, deck and pathways as one plan means the finishes, colours and elevations match and there are no awkward seams between separate pours added over different years.
Not when it is finished for the job. We use broom, exposed-aggregate or textured finishes that stay slip-resistant wet, and we plan drainage so water runs off the deck instead of pooling.
Yes. A properly built concrete pad is non-combustible and the right base for a fire pit or fire table. We size the pad to the seating area and build it on a compacted base like any other slab.
If the deck is structurally sound, resurfacing lays a fresh, slip-resistant finish over it for far less than a tear-out. We confirm the slab is sound on the free estimate first.

★★★★★

Did the outdoor kitchen counter, a fire-pit pad and the surrounding patio as one project. Everything matches because they planned it together from the start.

Pool deck drains exactly the way they promised and it is not slippery underfoot. Survived its first winter with no cracking or lifting.

Resurfaced our old pool deck rather than ripping it out. New finish, slip-resistant, and it cost a fraction of what a replacement would have.

The fire-table pad is sized perfectly for our seating and the colour ties into the patio. They thought about the whole yard, not just the one piece.
