Portland Concrete Driveways That Survive Winter
Your driveway takes the weight of vehicles and the punishment of freeze-thaw cycles. We build it right from the ground up, with a compacted base, air-entrained mix, and your choice of finish. New installations, full replacements, and widenings all start with a free written estimate.
- Proper base prep for drainage and load
- Air-entrained mix rated for freeze-thaw
- Broom, stamped, exposed, or colored finish
Site to finish
How a Driveway Slab Stays Flat
The concrete itself is only half the story. Before the truck arrives, the site is excavated to depth, graded so water runs away from the house, and a granular base is laid and compacted in lifts. This foundation prevents settling, heaving, and the cracking that follows.
The pour uses an air-entrained mix designed to flex through Portland's freeze-thaw cycles without spalling. Control joints are planned and saw-cut on a grid so shrinkage cracks follow the lines instead of running wild. After curing, sealing protects the surface from de-icing salt and moisture.
If your existing slab is structurally sound but worn, resurfacing and repair can extend its life at a fraction of the cost. We assess both options during the free site visit and also handle patios, walkways, and other residential concrete work on the same property.
Step by step
Pouring a Concrete Driveway in Portland
-
Remove the old slab
The existing driveway is broken up and hauled away. We excavate to the proper depth and check the grade so water drains away from the structure.
-
Prepare and compact the base
Granular material is spread and compacted in layers to create a stable, draining foundation. Forms are set to the finished slope and elevation.
-
Place and finish the concrete
Air-entrained concrete is placed, screeded level, and finished to your choice: broom, exposed aggregate, stamped, or colored.
-
Cut joints and cure
Control joints are saw-cut on a planned pattern. The slab cures under controlled conditions, and you receive a schedule for walking and driving.
Surface choices
Driveway Finishes for Portland Conditions
The finish you choose affects appearance, grip, maintenance, and cost. A brushed finish is the standard choice: affordable, durable, and easy to keep clean through winter salt and snow.
Exposed aggregate reveals the stone in the mix for natural texture and slip resistance. Stamped concrete is pressed with a pattern that mimics flagstone, slate, or brick and sealed for weather protection. Colored concrete uses integral pigment or hardener to tint the slab to match your home's palette. We bring finish samples to every estimate so you see them in natural light before committing.

Concrete Driveway Questions, Answered
Cost, base prep, finishes and timing for a concrete driveway in Portland.
Old driveway was heaved and cracked corner to corner. They rebuilt the base properly and the new broom-finish slab has stayed dead flat through a full winter.
Went with exposed aggregate and it looks sharp. The crew brought samples to the estimate so we knew exactly what we were getting before the pour.
Widened the driveway for a second vehicle and tied it into the original cleanly. You would not know it was two pours, the colour and finish match.
Quoted a resurface instead of a full tear-out because the slab was still sound. Saved us money and they were upfront about it from the first visit.
