Portland Concrete Sidewalks & Walkways Built to Last

Every path needs to shed water, resist frost heave, and stay safe underfoot in rain and snow. Portland Concrete pours sidewalks and walkways on solid base prep, angles them to drain, and finishes them with grip. We handle new installations, decorative upgrades in stamped or exposed-aggregate concrete, and repairs for settled or cracked paths. Free written estimate included.

Why Concrete Sidewalk Details Matter

A path that looks simple has to solve three problems at once: stay level so nobody stumbles, shed water so it does not pool and freeze, and grip when wet. Most failures start with a flat or back-sloped base that traps meltwater.

We excavate to grade, lay and compact a granular base, then set forms to a deliberate cross-slope (typically two percent). The concrete is placed, screeded, and finished broom for traction. Control joints are cut on a grid so the slab moves predictably with the seasons.

When a path is also a design element, stamped concrete or exposed-aggregate finishes tie it visually to the rest of the yard. For older paths that have heaved or cracked, concrete repair can often restore the surface without a full replacement. We assess the base on a free site visit.

From site to finish

How Portland Concrete Builds a Sidewalk

  1. Survey the path and slope

We walk the route with you, mark the width and direction, and determine the cross-slope needed to drain away from the house and adjacent surfaces.

  2. Prepare the base

Excavation removes old material or soft soil. A compacted granular base is laid, and forms are set to the finished elevation and slope.

  3. Place and finish the concrete

The mix is placed, screeded level, and finished with a broom texture for traction or stamped and sealed for a decorative look.

  4. Cut joints and cure

Control joints are cut on layout to manage seasonal movement. The slab cures per schedule, then ties cleanly into steps, driveways, or patios.

Finish and function

Decorative Walkways That Complement Your Yard

A plain broom-finish path does the job, but a walkway is also a visual line across the landscape. Stamped or exposed-aggregate concrete turns that line into a design feature that ties together the driveway, patio, and entry steps.

We match the pattern, texture, and color to concrete already on the property so a new sidewalk feels like part of the original plan, not an afterthought. When an existing path is uneven or cracked but the base is intact, walkway repair re-levels and resurfaces it for a fraction of the cost of demolition and replacement. Our free estimate includes a base assessment.

Common questions

Sidewalk & Walkway Questions, Answered

Slope, finishes, drainage and repair for concrete sidewalks and walkways in Portland.

A slight cross-slope, usually around two percent, lets rain and meltwater run off instead of pooling and then freezing. A flat or back-sloped path becomes an ice hazard every thaw, so we build the slope into the base and forms.
A broom finish is the standard for traction. Decorative walkways in exposed-aggregate or textured stamped concrete also stay grippy wet, while a smooth trowel finish does not and is not used outdoors.
Yes. We match the finish, pattern and colour to the driveway, patio or steps already in place so the new sidewalk reads as part of the yard, not a patch.
Often, yes. If the base is still sound, walkway repair can re-level, patch or resurface the path for far less than a full tear-out. We confirm the base on a free visit before recommending either.
Most walkways are placed in a day. You can walk on it within 24 to 48 hours, with the exact timing in the cure schedule we hand over. Decorative finishes are sealed once the slab has cured.

New front walkway that finally drains. The old one iced over every winter. They built a proper slope into it and it has been clear since.

Stamped a walkway from the driveway to the back gate and matched it to our patio. You would never guess it was poured years after the patio.

Our side-yard path was heaved and cracked. They re-levelled and repaired it instead of pushing a full replacement. Honest and tidy work.

Broom finish, dead flat, and the joints line up with the steps and driveway. Small job done with the same care as a big one.
