Tile-Shower Waterproofing with Laticrete Hydro Ban & 9235
When a tile shower needs a waterproofing membrane that works with the tile installer's system, Laticrete Hydro Ban and 9235 are the engineered choice. We apply these liquid membranes to spec, coordinate with your tile contractor's thinset and grout, and keep the whole-system warranty path intact. Portland Concrete handles the waterproofing prep and application so the tile installer takes over with matched Laticrete adhesive. Free written estimate on every project.

System integration
Why Tile Installers Specify Laticrete Waterproofing
The tile trade knows that a shower membrane, thinset, and grout from the same manufacturer create one warranted assembly. When Laticrete waterproofing sits under Laticrete thinset under Laticrete grout, the warranty chain stays unbroken. Mix brands at any layer and the warranty path fractures.
Hydro Ban is our go-to for residential showers and tubs because it applies quickly, cures with a visible color shift (teal-blue to olive-green), and gives the installer built-in quality control. For balconies and heavier-duty wet zones, we specify 9235 with appropriate traffic-bearing protection. The matched primer goes down first, the membrane gets applied to engineered thickness, and then the tile installer takes over with Laticrete adhesive.

Installation sequence
How Laticrete Waterproofing Gets Installed
-
Align on product and tile spec
We meet with the tile contractor to confirm whether Hydro Ban or 9235 fits the application, and lock in the matched thinset and grout so the whole system stays Laticrete from waterproofing through finish.
-
Prepare substrate per spec
The concrete or drywall substrate gets prepped to Laticrete standards. Cracks and joints are addressed with compatible repair material, and drain and corner details are set up for proper transition.
-
Apply membrane at thickness
Hydro Ban or 9235 is applied at the engineered thickness. Hydro Ban's color change from teal to olive as it cures gives us real-time coverage verification. Any uncured spots get a second coat before handoff.
-
Cure and hand to tile installer
After the membrane reaches full cure, the substrate is ready for the tile installer to apply Laticrete thinset. The whole assembly stays warranted because every layer is Laticrete.
Built-in quality control
The Hydro Ban Color Shift Tells the Story
Hydro Ban's transformation from teal-blue to olive-green as it cures is not just visual feedback, it is a quality-control tool. The color change signals that the membrane has reached cure strength and that coverage is complete across the entire surface. We use this color-coded verification to catch any thin spots or missed areas before the tile installer arrives.
If a section has not fully changed color, we apply a second coat to that area. This built-in QC step prevents the common problem of incomplete waterproofing that shows up months later as water intrusion. Pair this with Laticrete underlayments if the substrate needs leveling, and reference our full brand lineup for other system components.

Common questions
Laticrete Waterproofing Questions, Answered
Hydro Ban vs 9235, tile-system warranty, color-coded cure verification.
They installed Hydro Ban to spec, color-cured properly, ready for my thinset. Whole-Laticrete path warranty intact. The system discipline matters.
Tile shower with Laticrete waterproofing under tile install. Three years dry, no recurrence of the leak issues the previous tile job had. Right system.
The color-coded cure was the difference. Spots they would have called done were still uncured; the second coat fixed it. Real install QC.
Tile install warranty path stayed clean because they installed Laticrete waterproofing under Laticrete thinset under Laticrete grout. Whole assembly warranted.
