System thinking

How Mapei Concrete Solves Renovation Floors

A renovation floor has three jobs: get flat, stay dry, and hold whatever finish goes on top. Mapei handles all three with products designed to work as one unit. The self-leveling underlayment (Ultraplan, Novoplan) creates a dead-flat base that doesn't telegraph the old slab underneath, so tile, vinyl plank, or polished concrete sits on a true surface.

Below-grade or wet-room work gets Mapei waterproofing membranes that bond directly into the adhesive layer above, making the whole assembly one continuous moisture barrier. When concrete needs patching or bonding, Mapei repair mortars and adhesives tie old and new concrete together at performance spec.

The key is that every layer is formulated to grip the layer next to it. No mixing Mapei with a competitor's primer or adhesive. That discipline is what we bring to garage floor epoxy and commercial floor systems as well.

Installation sequence

How We Sequence Mapei Concrete in Portland

  1. Assess the slab and pick the Mapei line

We measure moisture, check for cracks, and determine what finish will sit on top. That tells us which Mapei products to use and in what order.

  2. Mechanically profile and prime

The concrete slab gets ground or shot-blasted to the profile Mapei specifies, then primed with the Mapei primer matched to that product line.

  3. Mix, pour, and finish the Mapei body

Self-leveling compound or waterproofing membrane goes down at the water ratio and temperature the Mapei spec sheet calls for, worked to the finish the next layer needs.

  4. Cure, document, and hand off

Each layer cures on the Mapei schedule. We photograph the work, keep the data sheets, and hand you the documentation so the warranty is clear.

Layer boundaries

Why Mapei Bonding Beats Mixed Brands

Most floor failures start at a layer boundary. Primer doesn't grip the slab, leveler doesn't bond to primer, adhesive doesn't stick to leveler. Each gap is a failure point. Mapei eliminates that by engineering every product to bond to the products above and below it in the system.

When you use Mapei Ultraplan or Novoplan with Mapei primer and Mapei adhesive, the whole assembly is one continuous bond. The same logic applies to Mapei waterproofing tied into tile, and to Mapei repair bonding old concrete to new. We follow the same system approach with Sika and Ardex installs.

Common questions

Mapei Questions Answered

Self-leveling, waterproofing, system compatibility and what Mapei does best in Portland.

Mapei Ultraplan and Novoplan are tested, predictable products with deep installer support. They pour to a flat, sound surface that takes a finish without telegraphing the slab below, which is exactly what a renovation needs.
Yes, that is one of its strengths. Mapei waterproofing membranes are designed to bond into Mapei thinset and tile adhesives, so the wet-area floor is one continuous system instead of a stack of unrelated layers.
Because every layer boundary is a place where bond failure can happen. Using a single product family means primer, leveler, waterproofing and adhesive are engineered to work together, removing the surprise bond issues.
Yes, when prep is done right. Mapei repair and adhesive products bond patched and existing concrete back to performance spec when the substrate is mechanically profiled and primed correctly.
Yes. We install the published Mapei system, primer, body, finish, in the correct sequence and at the temperature and mix ratio the spec calls for, so the product warranty stays intact.
