Mapei Waterproofing Systems for Portland Wet Rooms

Wet rooms, balconies and below-grade applications need a complete waterproofing system, not just a membrane. Mapei delivers Mapelastic field coverage paired with Mapeflex joint detail, primer and protection layer. Portland Concrete installs the full Mapei assembly to spec, ensuring every corner and transition is sealed. Free written estimate on every project.

Why the system matters

Mapelastic Membrane Needs Mapeflex Detail to Work

A membrane alone cannot seal a wet room. Corners, drains, penetrations and transitions all require matched joint-detail products. Mapei's Mapeflex family (tapes, sealants, transition strips) is engineered to work with Mapelastic, creating a unified waterproofing assembly. Skipping Mapeflex detail is the most common failure mode in waterproofing installs.

We specify and install the complete Mapei path: substrate prep with Mapei primer, Mapelastic field application, Mapeflex detail at every joint, and the protection layer (often Mapei Kerabond tile adhesive on tile projects). This integration keeps warranty paths intact and ensures the system performs as designed.

For projects specifying other brands, explore Sika waterproofing systems or Ardex waterproofing as alternative complete-system paths. All three deliver full coverage when installed correctly.

Installation sequence

How Mapei Waterproofing Gets Installed

  1. Assess and specify

We evaluate the application (wet room, balcony, foundation), confirm the correct Mapei product line (Mapelastic Smart, AquaDefense, etc.), and identify all joint-detail requirements and any tile-trade coordination.

  2. Prepare substrate

The concrete slab is cleaned, cracks are repaired with compatible Mapei repair products, and the surface is primed per Mapei spec. Joints are isolated with Mapeflex tape or sealant before membrane application.

  3. Apply membrane and detail

Mapelastic is mixed and applied to the specified thickness across the field. Simultaneously, Mapeflex detail products are installed at every corner, drain, penetration and transition. No shortcuts on detail work.

  4. Cure and finish

The waterproofing system cures per Mapei schedule. The protection layer (tile adhesive, traffic coating, or other finish) is applied per project spec, and the system is handed off ready for service.

The detail layer

Mapeflex Joint Detail Is the Waterproofing System's Backbone

Mapelastic field coverage is visible and measurable, but Mapeflex joint detail is where the system actually performs. Every corner, drain, pipe penetration and substrate transition must receive the matched Mapeflex product (tape, sealant or transition strip). This is not optional and cannot be skipped to save time or cost.

Coordinate Mapei SLU products for substrate prep and Mapei repair systems for crack remediation on the same project. See our full Mapei service menu for the complete brand integration.

Common questions

Mapei Waterproofing Questions Answered

Mapelastic vs Mapeflex, tile integration, balcony use, below-grade applications.

Mapelastic is the field membrane; Mapeflex is the joint-detail family (tapes, sealants, transition products) that completes the system. Both are needed; using Mapelastic alone fails at the corners.
Often yes, especially when the tile installer is using Mapei adhesive and grout. The whole-system Mapei path keeps warranty paths clean. We install to that integration.
Yes, with the right Mapei system for the deck conditions. We confirm the spec, install with traffic-rated protection where required.
Yes, Mapei has below-grade systems. For most residential foundation work, see also foundation waterproofing for the non-brand-specific service.
Depends on area and detail count. Most projects take a few days through cure; large-scope work stretches longer. The schedule is in the quote.
