Concrete Repair Mortars Built for Portland Conditions
When a crack, spall, or structural damage appears in Portland concrete, the repair mortar must match the specific situation. Ardex offers engineered formulations for horizontal patches, vertical wall repairs, deep-section structural work, and fine-line crack injection. We diagnose the repair type, select the correct Ardex product, apply the bonded-primer system, and deliver a repair built to last. Free assessment on every job.

Engineered for the situation
Why Ardex Repair Mortars Outperform Generic Patches
Concrete repair is not a one-size-all task. A fine crack needs flowable, flexible chemistry; a spalled edge needs high-strength bonded material; a vertical wall repair needs non-sag formulation; a deep structural section needs a product engineered for load transfer. Using a general-purpose mortar for a specialized situation is the leading cause of repair failure in Portland.
Ardex manufactures distinct repair mortars for each situation. Our role is to assess the damage, classify the repair type, and install the product engineered for that specific condition. The bonded-primer protocol ensures the repair material locks to the existing concrete substrate. This discipline of matching product to situation is what separates a repair that holds from one that fails.

Installation sequence
How Ardex Repair Installation Works in Portland
-
Assess the damage
We examine the crack, spall, or structural damage and determine the repair classification: horizontal patch, vertical wall repair, deep-section structural work, or fine-line crack injection. This assessment drives product selection.
-
Prepare the substrate
The repair area is cleaned to Ardex specification. Loose concrete is removed, edges are saw-cut where needed, and the surface is prepared to bare, clean concrete or aggregate per the product datasheet.
-
Apply bonded primer
The Ardex bonded primer is applied to the prepped substrate. This primer is the critical step that ensures the repair mortar bonds permanently to the existing concrete and does not delaminate.
-
Mix and place mortar
The selected Ardex repair mortar is mixed to manufacturer ratios and placed at the engineered thickness. The product is worked to fill voids and achieve proper consolidation.
-
Finish and cure
The repair is finished to match the surrounding concrete texture and gloss. The mortar cures per Ardex schedule, and the job is handed off with system documentation and warranty information.
Common failure patterns
Why Generic Mortars Fail on Concrete Repairs
We regularly repair failed concrete patches where a previous contractor applied a generic mortar to a situation that required a specialized Ardex product. The patch pops loose, the crack reopens, or the vertical repair sags and cracks. These failures happen because the wrong product was chosen for the repair type.
Ardex engineered its repair line specifically to prevent these failures. A horizontal patch product has different rheology than a vertical product. A fast-set mortar behaves differently in a deep section than a standard-set product. The Ardex range exists because one mortar cannot serve every repair. Our discipline is matching the product to the situation, which is what makes the repair hold.

Ardex Repair Questions Answered
Product matching, bonded primer, vertical repair, and warranty coverage.
Three failed previous repairs popped loose. They used the right Ardex product for vertical work with proper bonded primer; the new repair has held two years. Product match was the difference.
Structural repair on a deep slab section. They specced the Ardex deep-section product, not the standard mortar another contractor had suggested. Repair holds load, no cracking.
Multiple repair situations across one project, each with the matched Ardex product. The discipline of product-per-situation showed in the result. All repairs holding.
They were honest about color match limitations on the repair. Set the expectation properly, then matched as close as possible. No surprises at handoff.
