Slip-Resistant Pool Deck Concrete for Portland Backyards

Barefoot swimmers, chlorinated water, direct sun, and Oregon's freeze-thaw cycles demand a slab built differently than a standard patio. We pour pool decks with textured finishes that grip wet feet, slopes engineered away from the pool shell and house, and air-entrained concrete that survives winter. Free written estimate included.

Chlorine, water, and winter

Why Standard Concrete Patios Fail Around Pools

A typical backyard patio is built for foot traffic and occasional rain. A pool deck faces constant moisture, chemical exposure, thermal stress, and the repeated freeze-thaw cycles that crack ordinary concrete. Without the right mix design and surface finish, a pool deck deteriorates in two to three seasons.

We specify air-entrained concrete that traps tiny air bubbles, allowing water to expand safely during freeze cycles. The slab is sloped at two percent away from the pool coping and the house foundation, so standing water never collects. The finish is textured, broom or exposed-aggregate, so swimmers maintain grip even with wet skin.

The deck integrates with the pool shell itself, tied with an expansion joint at the perimeter. When paired with a patio or outdoor kitchen, the whole yard reads as one cohesive concrete design.

From site to swim

Building a Pool Deck Step by Step

  1. Measure and layout slope

We establish the deck perimeter, confirm the two-percent cross-slope away from the pool and house, locate any deck drains, and detail how surface water exits the property.

  2. Prepare base and set forms

The deck area is excavated to proper depth, a compacted granular base is installed, and forms are set to the planned slope. The perimeter is detailed to tie cleanly into the pool coping.

  3. Place and finish concrete

Air-entrained concrete is poured, screeded to slope, and finished with a slip-resistant texture. Broom finish is standard and practical. Exposed-aggregate or stamped finishes add decorative grip.

  4. Cut joints and seal

Control joints are cut on a grid pattern, including the expansion joint at the pool perimeter. The deck cures, then is sealed to protect against chlorine and UV before the pool opens.

Cohesive outdoor spaces

Tying Pool Decks Into the Whole Yard

A pool deck poured in isolation looks disconnected from the rest of the property. When we design the pool deck alongside the patio, fire pit pad, and outdoor kitchen, the elevations, slopes, finishes, and colors align as one unified space.

If an existing pool deck is sound but worn, pool deck resurfacing refreshes the surface without demolition. Either way, coordinating all outdoor living concrete creates a backyard that feels intentional and finished.

Common questions

Pool Deck Concrete Questions, Answered

Slip resistance, drainage, freeze-thaw and how pool decks tie into the yard in Portland.

A slip-resistant finish, broom for the standard practical look, exposed-aggregate for decorative grip, or textured stamped for a hardscape feel. We avoid smooth trowel finishes outside, especially around water.
Yes, when poured with an air-entrained mix, proper drainage and control joints on layout, then sealed. The same fundamentals that make a concrete driveway work for decades make a pool deck last too.
A deliberate cross-slope of about two percent, away from both the pool coping and the house. We set the slope into the base and forms before the pour so the finished surface drains cleanly to the right places, never towards the foundation.
Yes. We tie the new deck into the existing pool coping with a proper expansion joint at the perimeter and the right slope away from the pool. The handoff is detailed so the deck and the pool work together long-term.
Yes, and ideally it does. Matching the finish, colour and elevations to the patio, walkways and any outdoor kitchen makes the whole backyard read as one space rather than separate pours.

Designed the deck, the patio and the outdoor kitchen as one project. The whole back of the property reads as a finished outdoor space, not a stack of separate features.
